Out of town

I am currently out of town for business, but once I return I will have a report from this past weekend. Saturday was spent fishing for brown trout and Sunday I was chasing brook trout. Had good luck on both days.
I return to the Madison area late Tuesday, so I am hoping for a post on Wednesday.

  1. Hi, I just stumbled upon your blog. Looks like a great resource, and I've bookmarked it.

Was wondering if you might be able to answer a question: I fished Mt. Vernon yesterday for a couple hours and struck out. On my way to Mt. Horeb for a beer, all depressed, I turned off Hwy 92 to check an old bridge. I thought it was still Mt. Vernon, but turns out it's Deer Creek (there's a sign there in the pull-off that says "Deer Creek Fishing Area"), a gem-looker of a little stream you could step across. Haven't been able to find much about it online, but it does look trouty, maybe in the brookie sense. So, my question: Have you ever fished this? I plan to go back to try next week--and try it's companion just a mile or so East, too, Freyer's Feeder Creek (I think I have the name right, but maybe not). Any info you could provide on these two feeders to Mt. Vernon appreciated!

  2. Hey Kent,

Yes I have fished all of those streams in that complex. Deer creek is pretty good I haven't had all that much luck on Frey's feeder thou. Are you fly fishing or spin casting?

  3. Hey, thanks for the reply. I'm really glad I have found this blog. Glad and jealous, more accurately, I guess... You certainly seem to be one of the authorities for SW Wisconsin streams!
(How did you do those underwater shots of the brookies, by the way?)

Can you tell me what you found in Deer Creek? I enjoy fishing (yes, fly fishing) little, narrow streams, and so was excited when I stumbled on Deer Creek. Can you tell me, when you get a chance: What's in there (brookies and browns both?), what sizes you came across, and how you would approach the problem there, if you were (like me) a man who has been fishing for twenty years and is still mediocre at the art?

    many thanks,

    Kent

  4. Kent,

Again sorry for the late response work is crazy. Deer creek I caught some small brookies and browns both of those streams can fish very tough later in the year. Both Freys and Deer are classified as class two streams, but I have a feeling they could be upgraded to class 1. There are much better streams around to fish. I believe it would be worth a shot fishing it the last few weeks of the season to see if any large browns or brookies run up there to spawn. What areas do you traditionally fish? I can give you some ideas where you will have much better luck.

  5. Mt. Vernon is a great stream can be hard to fish because of how deep those holes get. I never do well fly fishing there unless I am fishing hoppers or ants in late summer. Spin Fishing I always do well there. Hard to fish past June because of the weeds and you can't really wade Mt. Vernon because of the mucky bottom and super deep pools and bends

  6. Inland, thanks.

I usually fish for smallies, actually, on local streams down here. The Apple my home water. Trout fishing, I usually try to get up around Viroqua area. So much up there (the heart of the Montana of the Midwest!). I've had a few good days on Mt. Vernon in the past, but haven't gotten up there early for a long time until a couple weeks ago, when, as I said, I struck out. I avoid it after the grass gets tall-- more frustration fly fishing in those conditions than anything. At least for impatient me. Anxious to learn of some under the radar streams you might point me to in Dane County area. So glad I found this blog!
